The three main boards
OCR (J277)
OCR is the most popular board for GCSE Computer Science, used by more schools than any other.

- Paper 2: Computational Thinking, Algorithms and Programming (80 marks, 1.5 hours)
- Total: 160 marks
- Programming language: Python, or any high-level language
Character: OCR questions tend to be straightforward and clearly worded. The specification is well-organised and the specimen papers closely match the real exams. Many teachers consider OCR the most "teachable" board.
AQA (8525)
AQA is the second most popular choice and is known for rigorous, well-structured exams.
- Paper 1: Computational Thinking and Programming Skills (80 marks, 1.5 hours)
- Paper 2: Computing Concepts (80 marks, 1.5 hours)
- Total: 160 marks
- Programming language: Python (or VB.Net/C#)
Character: AQA's Paper 1 is heavily programming-focused, which suits students who are strong coders. The theory paper (Paper 2) can include questions that require more analytical thinking than OCR. AQA questions sometimes require students to apply knowledge to unfamiliar scenarios.
Edexcel/Pearson (1CP2)
Edexcel (now branded as Pearson) is the third major board.
- Paper 1: Principles of Computer Science (80 marks, 1.5 hours)
- Paper 2: Application of Computational Thinking (80 marks, 1.5 hours)
- Total: 160 marks
- Programming language: Python (or Java/C#)
Character: Edexcel questions can be more verbose — longer question stems with more context. Some students find this helpful (more guidance), others find it harder to extract what's being asked. Edexcel also includes some questions on relational databases that other boards don't emphasise as much at GCSE.

Which board suits which student?
- Strong at programming? AQA's programming-heavy Paper 1 plays to your strength.
- Prefer clear, structured questions? OCR is widely considered the most accessible in terms of question clarity.
- Good at reading comprehension? Edexcel's longer question contexts might suit you — they give more information to work with.
- Interested in databases? Edexcel covers relational databases more than the others at GCSE level.
Does it actually matter?
Honestly, not much. The core content is 90% the same across all three boards. Your school chooses the board, not you, and switching schools for an exam board would be absurd.
What matters far more is:
- How well your teacher teaches the course
- How much you practice programming
- How many past papers you do
- Whether you revise actively or passively
