GCSE Computer Science Grade Boundaries Explained
Grade boundaries cause more confusion than almost any other part of the GCSE system. Students ask "what mark do I need for a 9?" as if there's a fixed answer, but the reality is more nuanced. Here's how it actually works.
What are grade boundaries?
A grade boundary is the minimum raw mark needed to achieve each grade in a specific exam, in a specific year. After every exam session, the exam board sets the boundaries based on how difficult the paper was and how the cohort performed.
This means the boundary for a grade 7 in AQA Computer Science might be 130/250 one year and 142/250 the next. The exact numbers change — but the overall standard stays roughly the same.
Why do they change?
Exam boards use a process called comparable outcomes. The idea is that if roughly the same proportion of students got a grade 7 last year, roughly the same proportion should get a grade 7 this year — even if the paper was harder or easier. The boundaries flex to achieve this.
In practice, this means:
- A harder paper = lower boundaries (you need fewer marks)
- An easier paper = higher boundaries (you need more marks)
- The grade you get reflects your position relative to other students, not just your raw score
Typical GCSE CS boundaries
While exact boundaries change every year, Computer Science grade boundaries typically fall in these ranges:
- Grade 9: around 75–85% of total marks
- Grade 7: around 55–65% of total marks
- Grade 4 (standard pass): around 30–40% of total marks

How to use boundaries in your revision
Grade boundaries are most useful after you've done a practice paper. Score yourself honestly, then compare your mark to the previous year's boundaries for that board. This gives you a rough predicted grade and tells you how many more marks you need to reach your target.
